Richard Kalmin trained as an architect in South Africa and that training led eventually to watercolour painting, which he enjoyed for almost thirty years.
His watercolours are transparent, using design, large shapes and vibrant colour in a loose but compositionally sophisticated style, allowing for much freedom of interpretation of subject matter. His paintings have been sold to patrons in Canada, USA, Ireland, Belize, Israel, England, and South Africa.
Richard was born in South Africa and qualified with a Dipl. in Architecture. He and his wife and 2 children emigrated to Canada in 1975. Richard was a signature member of the Toronto Watercolour Society (TWS) since its inception in 1985.

Painters in Water Colour) "Open Waters" exhibition.
His training in South Africa as an architect prepared him for and eventually led him into watercolour painting, which he has enjoyed since he started in 1983.
His watercolours are transparent, using design, large shapes and vibrant colour combinations to help express his loose but controlled style. This allows for much freedom of interpretation of subject matter. His paintings have been sold to patrons in Canada, USA, Ireland, Belize, Israel, England, and South Africa.
